Axiom Bags and Circular Ocean, Supporting Cleaner Seas

Thursday, November 30th, 2017 at 07:41 AM

Each year, over 8 million tons of plastics are introduced into our oceans. The effect is destructive to the environment and harmful to marine industries worldwide. Axiom Oceanweave pannier bags are the worlds first bicycle bags made of recycled fishing net, helping to turn the tide in the war against ocean waste.

In addition to manufacturing bags from recycled materials, Axiom Cycling Gear is partnered with ocean cleanup initiative Circular Ocean, a three year project (2015-2018) that aims to Inspire communities to realize the hidden economic opportunities of discarded fishing nets and ropes in the Northern Periphery and Arctic region.

Seeking innovative and sustainable solutions for marine plastic waste, the Circular Ocean project is inspiring enterprises and entrepreneurs to realize the opportunities hidden in discarded fishing nets and ropes. These materials can be reclaimed and recycled into a host of beneficial products, from shoes to cycling bags.

Circular Ocean is conducting research into the impact of discarded plastics and recycling solutions. Results from Circular Ocean’s research will be used to inform scientists, politicians, entrepreneurs and local communities on how to develop sustainable solutions to the problem of derelict fishing gear. Through careful consultation and research, Circular Ocean is cultivating and developing a host of resources for businesses and environmental stakeholders, including reports on the environmental impact of discarded fishing nets, research into the feasibility of fishnet collection for export and recycling, and a guide to supportive policy and regional frameworks regarding innovation.

Circular Ocean is making recycling easier and more accessible for business worldwide, so that others can follow Axiom’s sustainable example.
